Hawkes Bay Restorative Justice is working in Partnership with the Central Hawkes Bay Community to establish a Service for Restorative Practices to better support people, with the aim of reducing re-offending.
To achieve this an initiative involving collaboration with Police, Taiwhenua o Tamatea, Community groups and HB Restorative Justice has been designed around Restorative Principles. A person to Co-ordinate the plan and programme is needed.

Hawke's Bay Restorative Justice -Te Puna Wai Ora Incorporated - is a non-profit contracted by the Ministry of Justice. Our key role is to facilitate the process for restoration between the Victim of a crime, and the Offender. Where an Offender pleads guilt, the judge will refer the case to Restorative Justice - and will take into consideration any agreements made to 'make good' what has occurred. The Judge will take these agreements into consideration when sentencing.
The process is totally voluntary, and particularly aims to empower the Victim to have some in-put to sentencing. It is also a way for the Victim to regain some sense of personal 'restoration' of confidence felt from the impact.
The process involves a perpetrator of an offence and the person harmed being brought together in a safe meeting so the person harmed can ask the hard questions and describe the hurt and impact of the offence. The perpetrator also gets the opportunity to share their story and offer a real apology, with some also offering to pay something towards the pain or damage caused.
The process often leads to healing, brighter futures...and in a few cases, even friendship.
